South Pointe Elementary was established in 1991 and is located at 1050 4th Street, Miami Beach, Florida. It is situated on 5.41 acres at the southern tip of Miami Beach. South Pointe serves students from 1st to 10th street and the islands off of the MacArthur Causeway (including Fisher Island.)
It opened as an experimental school through a partnership between Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Education Alternatives, Inc., a private, for profit company. The educational philosophy of this joint venture was based on the Tesseract model. This philosophy held that all children are unique entities that require an individualized education plan.
In 1995, due to a lack of evidence supporting significant improvement in student achievement, South Pointe Elementary returned to the jurisdiction of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
Presently, South Pointe is a pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade school. Our school is engaged in a challenging and rewarding jouney as an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme candidate.
The school offers a full time gifted program in grades one through five, a Special Education (SPED) pull-out program in Kindergarten through second grade, and a SPED inclusion program in grades three through five.
Additionally, after-school enrichment programs include an Academic Excellence Program focusing on those students in need of tutoring programs in the areas of Reading and Mathematics.
South Pointe also has an extensive after school program consisting of homework help, computers, and extra curricular activities for a nominal fee.
The ethnic distribution of the school’s population is 31 percent White Non-Hispanic, 58 percent Hispanic, eight percent Black and three percent Asian/Multicultural.
Although no longer working under the Tesseract Model, South Pointe continues to foster each student's intellectual and emotional development, love of learning, and strength of character in an encouraging and collaborative environment. |
